Deadly shooting at Toronto's Eaton Centre sparks mass panic

TORONTO - Pandemonium erupted at the largest shopping mall in downtown Toronto Saturday after a shooter let off a string of bullets in a food court packed with weekend shoppers.

The hail of bullets killed a 25-year-old man, injured seven other people and sparked a frenzied mass exodus of the sprawling multi-level shopping centre around 6:30 p.m.

The shooting appears to have been a targeted one that left innocent bystanders caught in the middle, and police vowed to track the suspect down.

"It was unbelievable ... It was out of the blue," said 19-year-old Marcus Neves-Polonio who was working in the mall's food court when he saw a man pull out a gun and start firing.

"As soon as I heard the gunshots, I ducked under the table."

Others who saw the shooting scrambled for cover behind chairs, in washrooms and nearby stores. Still more sprinted for the exits.

Erica Solmes, who manages the McDonald's in the mall's food court, didn't see the shooter, but witnessed the chaos he triggered.

"There was probably 15 bullet shots," she said. "And then a whole stampede of people."

That mad dash resulted in thousands of people pouring into the streets of the downtown core.

"All of a sudden a herd of people were just running toward us, a massive crowd of people screaming, running, freaking out," said Hannah Stewart, 21, who was shopping in the mall at the time. "We saw this girl, sitting on the ground, and she had blood on her toes."

That girl appeared to have been one of the victims and told Stewart she had just been shot. At that point, police poured into the centre and began herding people outside.

"All these cops came running up and they started screaming at us to back off," Stewart said. "They were screaming at us to run and get out."

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie was also in the mall when the shooting took place and was one of the first to take to Twitter to break the news.

"Pretty sure someone just let off a round bullets in eaton center mall .. Wow just sprinted out of the mall," he tweeted. "People sprinting up the stairs right from where we just were ... Wow wow wow."

Among those injured in the incident, police said a 20-year-old man and a 13-year-old boy were in critical condition, and a woman and a man had serious injuries. A pregnant woman who was trampled in the rush to get out of the mall went into labour and another woman was grazed by a bullet.

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford called the crime a devastating one.

"It's a tragedy, it's absolutely terrible," he said. "We have to apprehend this shooter.

Police chief Bill Blair said everything is being done to bring the shooter to justice.

"Any place for discharging a fire arm in the city of Toronto is dangerous. In the food court of the Eaton centre on a Saturday evening, it's not only dangerous, it's outrageous," he said.

"The wanton disregard for the lives and safety of fellow citizens are shocking to us."

In a statement issued late Saturday, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty called it a case of "senseless, tragic violence" and expressed his condolences to the victims and their families. He said the tragedy would inspire Ontarians to work even harder to make their communities safer.

"We will respond as we always have ? with strength, determination and a desire to work together, and work even harder, to build communities that are safe, secure and free of gun violence," the statement said.

Police are now going through video surveillance and cross referencing witness statements as they try to pull together a clear picture of the shooting and the person who was holding the gun.

A homicide team remained in the centre combing the area for clues Saturday night and officers asked anyone with information on the shooter to contact police.

The corner arrived on scene early Sunday to remove the body of the man who was killed.

Officials said the mall and its parking garages would remain closed Sunday while police pressed on with their investigation.

The evening incident triggered multiple street closures and a partial shutdown of the subway line which runs beneath the mall. Yellow police tape marking a perimeter outside the centre remained in place late Saturday night.

It's not the first time the area has seen gunfire.

In 2005, a 15-year-old girl was killed and six others were wounded on Boxing Day, 2005 when shots rang out just north of the shopping centre.

In that case, Toronto teen Jane Creba was shopping with family on busy Yonge Street when she was caught in the crossfire of a shootout between rival gangs.

"Today certainly harkens back to that terrible moment. This is a very serious thing that has happened in a very public place, an important place in the city of Toronto," said Blair.

"When violence like this takes place in our city, we all have to stand up and say we won't tolerate it."

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill which happened as a result of an explosion on 20 April 2010 killed 11 men working on the platform. An independent review by a panel of experts led by IChemE Fellow Geoff Mailtand has now made a series of recommendations to the government on how to improve safety of the UK?s offshore oil sector following the BP oil disaster spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

This oil spill flowed uncontrollably for three months and is the largest accidental spill in petroleum industry history causing extensive damage to marine and wildlife.

It is estimated that it had released about 4.9 million barrels of crude oil before finally being capped and the government declaring the well dead in September 2010.

The Maitland panel report whilst optimistic and highlighted the oil sectors strengths, warns that there is no room for complacency when searching and producing oil and gas from inaccessible deposits. Professor Maitland said ?We have found a great many positives in the UK?s safety and environmental regulation, in what is generally regarded as a world-leading regime, whilst identifying areas where there is still scope for further reducing the risks of incidents occurring,?

The UK?s goal-setting safety regime allows industry to identify hazards, assess the risks and manage them with current best practice, fostering innovation and continuous improvement in process integrity, the report goes on to say.

Professor Maitland adds that the UK?s regime is useless if operators aren?t made to do what they say they?ll do and he wants regulators, as part of their normal inspection activities, to check that operators have such plans and are implementing them. The panel has asked regulators to work with the industry trade body Oil & Gas UK to propose an electronic system that overcomes these issues and allows information to be shared quickly. Malcolm Webb, Oil & Gas UK?s chief executive, said: ?Oil & Gas UK welcomes the Maitland Panel report which acknowledges the particular strengths of the UK?s offshore oil and gas safety and environmental protection regime and highlights that following the Deepwater Horizon incident, UK operators, regulators and other stakeholders re-doubled their efforts to improve their capabilities in these areas.?

Energy Minister Charles Hendry said ?The Deepwater Horizon disaster was a tragic reminder of the need for the highest possible standards of safety and environmental control in the oil industry. It is vital for the future of North Sea development that our offshore regulatory regime remains at the forefront of the global industry. I am grateful to Professor Maitland and his panel for producing this thorough assessment, which recognises that we have a regime which is already highly regarded by international observers.?

US, China relations key topic at defense meeting

(AP) ? Speaking near China's backyard Saturday, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta rejected suggestions that America's new focus on the Asia-Pacific will fuel conflict in the region or that the emerging strategy is meant as a threat to Beijing.

Instead, he appeared to offer an olive branch to the communist giant, with a broad message that the two often-feuding world powers must learn to work better together for the benefit of the entire region.

Delivering his most extensive thoughts to date on the fragile state of U.S.-China relations, Panetta said neither side is naive about their disagreements.

"We both understand the differences we have, we both understand the conflicts we have, but we also both understand that there really is no other alternative but for both of us to engage and to improve our communications and to improve our (military) relationship," Panetta said at a security conference in Singapore.

At the same time, however, Panetta warned Asian nations that they must find a way to resolve their own conflict because the U.S. can't always come charging in to help.

Tensions between the U.S. and China reverberate across the region, and are often focused on America's support of the island of Taiwan, which China considers its own. Another key area of dispute is the South China Sea, which China claims almost entirely as its own. But Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and the Philippines also have territorial claims there.

In addition, more recently the U.S. has been vocal in blaming China for cyberattacks that emanate from the country and steal critical data from U.S. government agencies and private American companies.

On the cyber front, Panetta said U.S. and Chinese leaders have talked about developing teams that can work together on difficult issues, including how they can exchange information on computer-based threats and whether they can agree on standards for the use of cyber capabilities.

The key, Panetta said, is for the U.S. and China to develop the ability to communicate when disputes arise so that they can be resolved peacefully.

Defense experts attending the conference peppered Panetta with questions about China, including one from a member of China's People's Liberation Army. But officials also noted that Beijing did not send any of its senior leaders to the conference. It was not clear why, although some officials suggested that China's leaders were busy with internal issues.

Questioners asked whether adding more U.S. military to the region might embolden some smaller nations and risk triggering more conflicts. And they wondered aloud whether China's leaders boycotted the conference in protest over America's beefed up strategy for the region.

"I don't think we should take the attitude that just because we improve their capabilities that we're asking for more trouble," Panetta said.

Panetta also issued a strong call for Asian nations to set up a code of conduct, including rules governing maritime rights and navigation in the South China Sea, and then develop a forum where disputes can be settled.

"It isn't enough for the United States to come charging in and try and resolve these issues," Panetta said, adding that the Asian nations must develop ways to peacefully solve their own problems.

Panetta's speech here was designed to give a more detailed explanation about the new defense strategy, which puts more focus on the Asia-Pacific, including plans to increase the number of U.S. military personnel, warships and other assets in the region over the next several years.

Specifically, he said that by 2020, about 60 percent of the fleet will be assigned there as part of a new strategy to increase U.S. presence in Asia. Currently, the Navy has about 285 ships, with roughly half assigned to each coast, but that total may decline a bit as some ships are retired in the coming years and may not be replaced.

The current fleet includes 11 aircraft carriers, with six assigned to the Pacific. The West Coast total is expected to go down to five, but Panetta Saturday said he will maintain 6 carriers in the Pacific, over the long term.

While noting it may take years to complete the transition, Panetta assured his audience at the conference in Singapore that U.S. budget problems and cutbacks would not get in the way of changes. He said the Defense Department has money in the five-year budget plan to meet those goals.

He said he is looking forward to visiting China later this year, adding that he wants to see the U.S. and China deepen their military ties, including on counterdrug programs and humanitarian aid.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who was attending the conference, questioned Panetta's optimism about relations with China, but said he hopes it works out.

He added that the Pentagon must begin planning for the possibility that another $500 million may have to be slashed from the defense budget early next year if lawmakers can't agree on spending cuts in the next several months.

Panetta has said he believes Congress will eventually find a way to avoid the automatic cuts.

Singapore is Panetta's second stop on a nine-day trip through Asia. He was in Hawaii on Thursday and is expected to travel to Vietnam and India.

Google showing off 'next dimension' of Maps at event next week

Android Central

Press invites are going out for a Google Maps press event next Wednesday, June 6, where the company says it'll show off the "next dimension" of Maps. That'll be some sort of 3D offering then, we'd imagine. Right now the Google Maps web interface supports 3D features through WebGL, while the Android app can show 3D buildings and Street View images. So presumably whatever's next will be an expansion of these features, possibly bringing in elements of Google Earth, too.

Little solid information is presented with the invite, though attendees are promised a "behind-the-scenes look at Google Maps," as well as a demo of "some of the newest technology" and "upcoming features." These will apparently "help people get where they want to go -- both physically and virtually." So new 3D functionality is certainly a safe bet.

The event will take place just five days before the start of Apple's WWDC (Worldwide Developer Conference), where Google's arch-rival is expected to unveil its own iOS maps solution. Right now Maps on iOS is powered by Google Maps, and recent reports have suggested Apple will look to re-vamp Maps with new 3D features, and a new non-Google back-end. (Thus depriving its foe of the associated ad revenue.)

The natural place for this kind of Google Maps announcement might've been the Google IO Developer Conference, which takes place in late June. But by strutting its 3D stuff a few weeks earlier, Google will be hoping to beat Apple to the punch. Whatever's shown off next week, you can bet Android will account for at least part of it, and so we'll be watching with interest next Wednesday.

Whose Islands are they? South Korea tries branding in its dispute with Japan

Japan and Korea have long sparred over the Takeshima/Dokdo islets. The latest bid to promote Korea's claim: Napa Valley wine labels.

When it comes to some disputed islets located in the Sea of Japan, South Korea is not shy about making its claim.

Though the Japanese refer to island group as Takeshima and remain in a bitter dispute over the issue, ?Koreans are adamant that Dokdo is Korean sovereign territory ? and they are very committed to letting the rest of the world know.

The latest ploy: a Napa Valley wine produced by Korean-American dentist Ahn Jae-hyun at his Dokdo Winery that uses the island post code as its moniker.

Illustrating the fervor with which such attempts to garner attention for Korea?s sovereign claims over the outcrop, when the wine debuted on the Korean market the local distributor pledged to donate all proceeds to nonprofit groups promoting Korean sovereign claims in other countries. ?

While both Korea and Japan point to historical documents to back up their respective claims, South Korea has occupied Dokdo/Takeshima for more than half a century. And it remains a key rallying symbol for lingering resentment over Japan's colonial occupation of the then unified Korean Peninsula in the first half of the 20th century.

Previous efforts to highlight Korea?s territorial claims to Dokdo/Takeshima range from what some observers view as the practical to the more extreme.

In 2010, the Korean singer Kim Jang-hoon was behind a months-long video advertisement in New York's Times Square that not only specifically proclaimed Dokdo as Korean territory but also made sure to refer to the sea in which they are located the East Sea, as opposed to the Sea of Japan.

In recent years, a series of ads taken out in major American newspapers announced a near identical message. The latest, placed as a full-page ad in The New York Times in March by Dokdo campaigner Seo Kyoung-duk and South Korean e-commerce firm Gmarket displayed the national flags of four countries ? including the South Korean Taegukgi ? alongside the names of four islands related to each.

In the case of the other three countries, a line connects each island with the relevant national flag ? except that of South Korea and Dokdo. Readers were encouraged to connect the two, the implication being that Dokdo is Korean territory. Japan protested the ad.?

In 2008, the president of the Korean Dry Cleaners Association in the US produced plastic bags emblazoned with a picture and a map of the disputed island along with the English slogans ?Dokdo Island is Korean territory? and ?The Japanese government must acknowledge this fact,? which were taken up by about 100 Korean dry cleaners in New York.?

And the Korea Times, a leading South Korean English-language newspaper, has for several years run an international Dokdo-themed essay competition in conjunction with the Seoul-based Northeast Asian History Foundation that invariably challenges entrants to tip their hat toward Korea?s claims to the outcrop. The winner receives a $1,270 cash prize.

Still, despite the stated intentions of Dokdo wine producer Ahn and others like him, his website gently hints at what could be seen as the futility of the territorial dispute.

Without any apparent irony, it states: ?For as long as we can remember, there has been much controversy over the island and the ownership of it. Instead of appreciating the beauty of Dokdo, the world has been too busy fighting over it.?

On Diamond Jubilee's eve, diverse Britain seeks unity in Queen Elizabeth

Some say monarchy is a rare unifier in a land absorbing large?numbers of immigrants. 'She will become my queen, too,' says newly minted Briton Youssef?Siblini.

By Ben Arnoldy,?Staff writer / June 1, 2012

An office building by the river Thames in London is decorated with British flags in preparations for the weekend celebrations to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, Thursday, May 31. The capital is preparing to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, the 60th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne.

Flanked by the British flag and a portrait of Queen?Elizabeth, who marks her 60th year on the throne this weekend with a diamond jubilee, Youssef?Siblini poses for his first photo as a Briton and as a subject of the?crown.

Moments earlier Mr. Siblini and seven other immigrants swore an oath?of citizenship to be ?faithful and bear true allegiance to Her?Majesty.?

For Siblini, an immigrant from Lebanon, the oath of fealty helps bring him?into the fold of his new homeland. ?I think it?s a good idea to make?you feel that you are English now,? he says. ?She will become my queen?too.?

Starting tomorrow, Britain kicks off a four-day national celebration?of the queen?s Diamond Jubilee. The monarchy is riding high levels of?public support even as Britons widely express unease with a sense of?crumbling community spirit. Some link the two sentiments, arguing the?monarchy is one of the few unifiers in a country absorbing large?numbers of immigrants.?

??The monarchy signifies the unity and diversity of the British?nation,? says Phillip Blond, director of ResPublica, a think-tank in?London working on social cohesion. ?She?s not white people?s monarch.?She?s the monarch of all the British people and all the British?legacies and dominions.?

Over the 60 years of Queen Elizabeth?s reign, Britain?s overseas?empire finished breaking away, but the British Isles themselves grew?far more diverse. Net immigration, once as low as 48,000 in 1997, shot up to a quarter of a million by 2010.

?Polls show the public has grown uneasy with the pace of immigration?and its impact on social cohesion. A 2011 YouGov poll found 88 percent?of British respondents agreed that immigrants who are unable to speak?English or unwilling to integrate have created ?discomfort and?disjointedness? in Britain.

As in many parts of Europe, multiculturalism is losing ground to?greater assertions of a national set of values and heritage.?For many critics of the monarchy, the need for a unifying symbol?appears neither urgent nor best served by a hereditary office.

?People will find something to rally around whether it?s the sports?teams ? or [actor] Stephen Fry,? says Graham Smith, head of Republic,?an anti-monarchy advocacy group. ?We don?t need to allow these peoples?[royals] to co-opt all that in order for their own personal gain.?

Remember, You're Dating Your Neighbor | glory from dust

I don?t often rave about books. I am a lover of books, and I read a lot of them, but I rarely do any raving. And if I do anything approaching raving, it?s usually to tout some old solid Puritan volume ? Richard Sibbes?s recently published collection of sermons on the Song of Solomon, for example.

But then a genuine gem comes along, and, lo and behold, I can?t help but rave about it. That gem of a book is?Sex, Dating, and Relationships: A Fresh Approach, published in February 2012 by Crossway and written by Gerald Hiestand and Jay Thomas, two wise and well-equipped pastor-theologians. (You can get yourself a copy on Amazon for about $10).

I hope to convince you that every pastor, discipler, parent, and young adult should read, study, and discuss this book.

What We?re Not Talking About (Well)

We evangelicals talk a lot about marriage. Whether it?s defending against perversions of the institution from within and without the church, or sitting down at the feet of sage pastors and pastors? wives to hear the lessons they have to teach about what Christian marriage is and is not, we spill a lot of ink and spend a lot of breath and write a lot of blog posts about marriage. That is partly because in our particular cultural moment it?s a conversation we need to have, and, I think, mainly because Biblically speaking it?s a conversation whose contours are relatively clear. No pastor can honestly say the Bible has nothing to say about marriage and married life.

But that is not the case ? or at least it hasn?t seemed to be the case ? with dating. Pastors routinely say to their congregations, and especially the young folks and college groups, that the Scriptures have little to nothing to say about romantic relationships pre-wedding. To earnest questioners who want to know what dating should look like and how it should work, many pastors give a less than pastoral answer: ?Well, beyond the rule about not having sex before your wedding night, you know, it?s really up to you and the Lord as to how to find your future spouse and what romance will look like as you date.? How supremely unsatisfying!

The Antidote

Enter pastors Gerald Hiestand and Jay Thomas. These men, wielding God?s truth well and winsomely, are like superheroes swooping in to save the day ? or at least to save dating. They enter a realm already populated by ideas and perspectives (some good and some bad ? probably mostly bad). And while cleaning up the debris and putting things back in their places, the authors do a great deal to elevate, reframe and refocus, and bring gospel simplicity to the topic of dating, all with a refreshing clarity and firm-but-gentle pastoral tone. It is truly a fresh approach: God-centered where we are strongly tempted ? and have tended ? to focus on ourselves.

Here?s the book?s main argument in the authors? own words:

[T]he Bible is silent about sexual boundaries within a dating relationship precisely because God does not view a dating relationship as something distinct from the neighbor relationship. Further, the Bible?s silence regarding dating relationships is not an instance of the Bible?s being silent on dating because it did not exist when the Bible was written, such as one could argue about cars or computers. On the contrary, sexual propriety is an issue the Bible pays a great deal of attention to. While God has not explicitly prescribed the means by which we are to move from the neighbor relationship to the marriage relationship (i.e., courting, dating, arranged marriages), he has clearly prescribed how he expects all men and women to act outside the marriage relationship. Far be it from us to invent our own guidelines of sexual propriety based on our relatively modern way of conducting premarital relations. (p. 53)

By showing that God does offer direction for dating relationships in his Word, if slightly indirectly, Hiestand and Thomas open up a treasure trove of Biblical wisdom. Dating is no longer a relational and sexual free-for-all; it has clear boundaries, not vague ones that you and your boyfriend or girlfriend devise for yourselves ? which, the authors point out, is never a good idea.

The reason for this, which the authors so ably lay out in the first two chapters and then continue to weave through the rest of the book, is that sexual propriety is not about God?s placing arbitrary restrictions on our relationships with the opposite sex. Indeed nothing God calls us to is wanton or capricious. God?s commands are all ?about what brings him the most glory? (p. 14). And what brings him the most glory is our reflecting his holiness and his grace more perfectly. Sex is all about the gospel (ch. 1), and from this reality flow all kinds of implications for how we should relate inside?and?outside of marriage, the only proper realm for sexual activity. Propriety in sexual matters is actually a means of protecting the Good News, where impropriety (sin is the better word) garbles and miscommunicates and mishandles that Good News.

The authors admit from the start that their message will be countercultural even within the church (p. 15). Yet it is my sense that even though it may cut against the grain, the fact that the radicalism of the authors? exhortation to purity comes not from within themselves but from God?s own heart means the Holy Spirit will use this book to convict and encourage in a big way.

Should We Kiss Dating Goodbye?

So what do we do about it? Readers do not have to wonder how to put all this into practice. Hiestand and Thomas are men of great knowledge and understanding, to be sure, but they impart truth not only through solid theological formulations but also with wise pastoral counsel. And though what they are saying is radical in a sense, they are not overly reactionary in their approach.

Sex, Dating, and Relationships?is not about abolishing dating. (That?s some good news for some of you who may be trembling by this point.) It?s about reforming dating in light of our sinful ways and God?s good design.

And what does that entail? Well, for the authors it?s important to point out that dating, while an acceptable precursor to marriage, is not a Biblical category of male-female relationship. The person you are going out on dates with is not your pre-spouse but a neighbor, and he or she does not cease to be a neighbor (with whom sexual activity is not permitted) until marriage (when sexual activity, according to Paul, is in fact commanded!).

We should not be swayed into believing otherwise by descriptions of ?committed? dating relationships. Commitment, Hiestand and Thomas remind us, is found in a solemn and rock-solid wedding vow, not in a temporary relationship that is only ?permanent for now.? Dating is always casual until/unless it becomes an engagement. (So the authors speak directly to women: ?In years gone by, a man would court a woman to be his wife. But in our day, a man courts a woman to be his girlfriend. How lame is that?? [p. 63])

How should dating be different? Hiestand and Thomas put forward a solution they call ?dating friendships.? These cut out the romantic and sexual overtones of typical dating relationships and structure the dates around getting to know one another as good friends. This is guided by four principles (backed up by Scriptural passages throughout the book):

  1. ?Maintaining the guidelines of sexual and romantic purity found in the neighbor relationship;
  2. Communicating clearly about one?s intentions;
  3. Viewing dating as an activity rather than a category of relationship; and
  4. Considering a relationship?s exclusivity as voluntary? (p. 93).

Is this a good solution? I think so! Is it the only solution based on the problems laid out in the book? Probably not. I think the proof is probably somewhere in the pudding. What would it look like for a pastor of college ministries, say, to begin counseling all students under his care to date in the way Hiestand and Thomas recommend? Does it go well, or could it go better if the counsel were tweaked? As for me, I think this is something to be tested and figured out in the crucible of the local church.

Why Read It?

To finish up my rambling ramshackle review, I want to enumerate some of the reasons I think this book should be widely read. First off, the book covers much more than I?ve been able to summarize. It deals with some interesting issues in places, like whether sexual desire is biologically determined and incapable of being controlled, and also features later chapters on taking this notion of radical purity into your lifestyle (beyond dating) and on singleness.?Sex, Dating, and Relationships offers much more than a discussion of dating, in other words; and whether or not all the chapters hang together as well as they could, every page of the book is nonetheless well written and well argued and well worth reading.

Secondly, and I hope this has been obvious, this book and the issues it touches on are so relevant for the church today and every day. What is accomplished in the book merits reading and consideration by pastors (especially the ones who go around teaching that everyone can just figure out dating for themselves!), those who are involved in the lives of single people in the church, including lay disciplers, student ministers, and the like, and perhaps most of all by parents and singles themselves.

Thirdly, the book has been expertly enriched with questions for reflection at the end of each chapter. These make?Sex, Dating, and Relationships quite useable as a book for small groups as well as for extended individual study and grappling.

If we as a church want to be built up by healthy marriages and healthy celibates, the issues tackled in Hiestand and Thomas?s book are critical for us to understand, wrestle with, and work out in our own lives and in the lives of others. Tolle lege!

Microsoft confirms upgrade path and pricing for Windows 8: $14.99 for those buying new PCs

We've just gotten a thorough look at the Windows 8 Release Preview, and Microsoft has now also finally confirmed what the upgrade path will look like for those buying PCs before the OS is officially released later this year. The company will be rolling out a Windows Upgrade Offer in no less than 131 markets starting June 2nd, which will let anyone who buys an eligible Windows 7-based PC also purchase a Windows 8 Pro upgrade for $14.99 -- that offer will be valid through January 31st, 2013. Upgrade offers for those who already own a Windows 7-based PC will also be announced in the "coming months," but that's unfortunately as much as Microsoft is saying about those at the moment.

John Edwards Verdict: Not Guilty on One of Six Counts, Mistrial Declared on Remaining Charges

John Edwards was found not guilty on one of six counts in his campaign finance fraud trial today, with the jury hopelessly deadlocked on the remaining charges.

Judge Catherine Eagles declared a mistrial on the five counts for which the jury couldn't reach a verdict. He can therefore be retried, but it's unlikely he will be.

Edwards, a two-time presidential candidate, was accused of soliciting nearly $1 million from donors to cover up his affair and love child with Rielle Hunter.

He was found unanimously not guilty on Count 3 of the six-part indictment.

John Edwards is Pumped!

That count pertained only to whether Edwards illegally received hundreds of thousands of dollars from heiress Rachel "Bunny" Mellon to cover up the affair.

Just hours ago, the foreman announced that the jury was deadlocked on five of the six counts, but Eagles ordered them to go back to deliberating.

The jury came back less than an hour later and declared itself hung, or deadlocked with no possibility of changing that fact, on the five counts.

Following the verdict, the two-time presidential hopeful hugged attorney Abbe Lowell, his daughter Cate Edwards, 30, and his two elderly parents.

The jury began deliberating May 18 in the case, which took on an air of a steamy soap opera as much as a debate over intricacies of campaign finance law.

The government spent three weeks building its thin case, much of it tethered to the testimony of Andrew Young, once Edwards' most loyal aide.

Edwards' defense - that he lied to keep the affair a secret from his terminally ill wife, not to advance his career - was tough to disprove, however.

He's a miserable human being, but that doesn't mean he acted illegally.

(AP) ? Colombian superstar Juanes said singer-songwriter-producer Juan Luis Guerra got him out of his comfort zone when the musician started rearranging his songs for his "MTV Unplugged" taping.

And Juanes was happy to take on the challenge.

"He put me in another place, but for me as a musician, as an artist, I was like: 'Wow. This is a new world. I feel like I can do this,'" Juanes said in a recent interview. "We tried different styles ... (and) I was not used to that kind of arrangement."

Guerra, the Dominican Grammy-winning producer, is known for his bachata and merengue sound. He's won the Latin Grammy for album of the year three times. Juanes, also a Grammy winner, has a sound that is built from rock and metal genres.

The singer said the 14 songs on "Juanes: MTV Unplugged," released this week, are a blend of Latin, jazz, blues, rock, folk and classic sounds. He says the process felt new.

"You know, it's scary, but it's kind of what I'm looking for now," he said. "Just to take the risk and go to different places and try different things. So it's not about fear, it's more about risk."

The first single, "Le Senal (The Sign)," has peaked at No. 1 on Billboard's U.S. Latin Songs chart. The special, which aired Monday, was taped at the New World Symphony Center in Miami Beach, Fla., in February.

Juanes says a new sound will be all over his upcoming studio album, due out next year.

"The 'Unplugged' right now is like a transition album. It's going to give (me) some more time to keep writing my songs and go the studio," he said. "It's going to be completely different, wild and loud, and happy."

The 39-year old is married to model-actress Karen Martinez. He says he's noticed his musical abilities spillover onto his daughters, ages 7 and 8, who are now taking piano lessons. He also has a 2-year-old son, who he says is "crazy with cars and superheroes."

"Unplugged" is the singer's first release since splitting with his longtime manager, Fernan Martinez.

"It's all about cycles, things stop and sometimes things end," he said of the split. "And now I just feel like writing new pages of my life, new chapters. So I feel really positive, and at the same time, really thankful of the past."
