For some reason in this code the loop is not reading for lack of better words. When ever compiled/run it just completely skipped the loop.

 #include <stdio.h> #include <string.h> #include <conio.h>  void strip_newline(char *str, int size) {    int i;    for (i=0;i<size;++i){        if ( str[i] == '\n'){             str[i] = '\0';             return;             }        } }  int main() {   //Integers     int age;     char name[101];     char hh[4];     int total;     int counter;     counter = 0;     total = 0;     int yearly_visits;     yearly_visits = 0;     //Name     printf("Please Enter your name: \n");     fgets(name, 101, stdin);     strip_newline;     //Age     printf("Please Enter your Age: \n");     scanf("%d", &age);     //Heart History and For Loop (Yes)     printf("Do you have any history with Heart Issues? (Yes or No all Lowercase): \n");     fgets(hh, 4, stdin);     strip_newline;     if(strcmp(hh, "yes")==0) /* Incase you were wondering "hh" stands for Heart History */     {       printf("Alright for a whole month you are gonna keep this program open and record if you\n go to the doctor that day if yes put a 1\n if no put a 0.\n");       for(counter=0; counter<30; counter++)       {          printf("Please Enter 0 if you visited the doctor for your heart to day or 1 if you did: ");          total = counter + total;          counter = counter + 1;       }     }     //"No" for loop/if statement     if(strcmp(hh, "no")==0)     {       printf("Alright for a whole month you are gonna keep this program open and record if you\n go to the doctor that day if yes put a 1\n if no put a 0.\n");       for(counter=0; counter<30; counter++)       {          printf("Please Enter 0 if you visited the doctor for your heart to day or 1 if you did: ");          total = counter + total;          counter = counter + 1;       }            }     //Yearly Calculation     yearly_visits = total * 12; /* The total by 12 for all the months. */     printf("Please Note that the data may be innacurate due to a good or bad month.\n");     printf("The total time you visited this month was %d and the total time you'll visit this month are %d.", total, yearly_visits);          getch();  }

You have to pass parameters to call strip_newline(). All you have currently is just the function name without passing any parameters to it.

Could you explain. The way that strip_newline is called is how I was thought.

Let me turn the question around. Why do you call fgets() the way you do passing parameters? Why not just use:

 fgets;

    if you expect

 strip_newline;

    to work.

Video: Principles of locomotion in confined spaces could help robot teams work underground

Video: Principles of locomotion in confined spaces could help robot teams work underground

    Tuesday, May 21, 2013

Future teams of subterranean search and rescue robots may owe their success to the lowly fire ant, a much-despised insect whose painful bites and extensive networks of underground tunnels are all-too-familiar to people living in the southern United States.

By studying fire ants in the laboratory using video tracking equipment and X-ray computed tomography, researchers have uncovered fundamental principles of locomotion that robot teams could one day use to travel quickly and easily through underground tunnels. Among the principles is building tunnel environments that assist in moving around by limiting slips and falls, and by reducing the need for complex neural processing.

Among the study's surprises was the first observation that ants in confined spaces use their antennae for locomotion as well as for sensing the environment.

"Our hypothesis is that the ants are creating their environment in just the right way to allow them to move up and down rapidly with a minimal amount of neural control," said Dan Goldman, an associate professor in the School of Physics at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and one of the paper's co-authors. "The environment allows the ants to make missteps and not suffer for them. These ants can teach us some remarkably effective tricks for maneuvering in subterranean environments."

The research was scheduled to be reported May 20 in the early online edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The work was sponsored by the National Science Foundation's Physics of Living Systems program.

In a series of studies carried out by graduate research assistant Nick Gravish, groups of fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) were placed into tubes of soil and allowed to dig tunnels for 20 hours. To simulate a range of environmental conditions, Gravish and postdoctoral fellow Daria Monaenkova varied the size of the soil particles from 50 microns on up to 600 microns, and also altered the moisture content from 1 to 20 percent.

While the particle size and moisture content did produce changes in the volume of tunnels produced and the depth that the ants dug, the diameters of the tunnels remained constant ? and comparable to the length of the creatures' own bodies: about 3.5 millimeters.

"Independent of whether the soil particles were as large as the animals' heads or whether they were fine powder, or whether the soil was damp or contained very little moisture, the tunnel size was always the same within a tight range," said Goldman. "The size of the tunnels appears to be a design principle used by the ants, something that they were controlling for."

Gravish believes such a scaling effect allows the ants to make best use of their antennae, limbs and body to rapidly ascend and descend in the tunnels by interacting with the walls and limiting the range of possible missteps.

"In these subterranean environments where their leg motions are certainly hindered, we see that the speeds at which these ants can run are the same," he said. "The tunnel size seems to have little, if any, effect on locomotion as defined by speed."

The researchers used X-ray computed tomography to study tunnels the ants built in the test chambers, gathering 168 observations. They also used video tracking equipment to collect data on ants moving through tunnels made between two clear plates ? much like "ant farms" sold for children ? and through a maze of glass tubes of differing diameters.

The maze was mounted on an air piston which could periodically be fired, dropping the maze with a force of as much as 27 times that of gravity. The sudden movement caused about half of the ants in the tubes to lose their footing and begin to fall. That led to one of the study's most surprising findings: the creatures used their antennae to help grab onto the tube walls as they fell.

"A lot of us who have studied social insects for a long time have never seen antennae used in that way," said Michael Goodisman, a professor in the Georgia Tech School of Biology and one of the paper's other co-authors. "It's incredible that they catch themselves with their antennae. This is an adaptive behavior that we never would have expected."

By analyzing ants falling in the glass tubes, the researchers determined that the tube diameter played a key role in whether the animals could arrest their fall.

In future studies, the researchers plan to explore how the ants excavate their tunnel networks, which involves moving massive amounts of soil. That soil is the source of the large mounds for which fire ants are known.

While the research focused on understanding the principles behind how ants move in confined spaces, the results could have implications for future teams of small robots.

"The problems that the ants face are the same kinds of problems that a digging robot working in a confined space would potentially face ? the need for rapid movement, stability and safety ? all with limited sensing and brain power," said Goodisman. "If we want to build machines that dig, we can build in controls like these ants have."

Why use fire ants for studying underground locomotion?

"These animals dig virtually non-stop, and they are good, repeatable study subjects," Goodisman explained. "And they are very convenient for us to study. We can go outside the laboratory door and collect them virtually anywhere."

Te'o off-limits to media but not Maxim party

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Manti Te'o isn't hiding out. He's just not talking to the media.

After being spotted attending a party thrown by the magazine Maxim last week in Hollywood, Te'o was back in San Diego at the Chargers second open session of organized team activities on Monday.

For the second straight week, the former Notre Dame linebacker was barred from speaking with reporters.

Maxim confirmed that Te'o attended a party after the magazine included his fake girlfriend on its list of the world's 100 hottest women.

The Chargers apparently are trying to put the fake girlfriend episode behind by keeping Te'o off-limits to the media until minicamp in mid-June. Te'o's attending the party seemed to refresh in people's minds how the Heisman Trophy runner-up was caught in an elaborate hoax. The magazine put Te'o's fake girlfriend at No. 69 on its list, running a picture of an "invisible" girl in a bikini superimposed over an ocean scene.

Te'o posed with several women at the Maxim party, including models Kendra Wilkinson and Courtney Caldwell, and beach volleyball player Jess Gysin.

Rookie head coach Mike McCoy said he didn't know Te'o went to the Maxim bash.

"He's going to make certain decisions. We'll keep that in-house with what we think and what we're doing with that," the coach said.

Te'o was drafted by the Chargers in the second round.

He dropped out of the first round in part because of his poor performance in Notre Dame's blowout loss to Alabama in the national championship game. The fake girlfriend hoax that was revealed in January and became a national sensation didn't help, either.

The Chargers, who are trying to rebuild under a new regime after missing the playoffs three straight seasons, have taken unprecedented steps to limit Te'o's time in front of the microphones. The team refused to let reporters do customary one-on-ones with him after his introductory news conference during the draft, and has continued to refuse to set up one-on-one interviews with the linebacker.

Te'o did speak after the first practice of rookie minicamp on May 10 but has been the only player off-limits during OTAs, which are practices in helmets, jerseys and shorts.

Some reporters do have football-related questions for Te'o.

"We have a plan like we have for everything else," McCoy said. "He's here. He's a young player. The organization has a schedule for him like we do every other player of putting him in front of the media. We'll do it accordingly.

"He's doing a nice job and he'll be in front of you when we put him out here."

McCoy was Denver's offensive coordinator when Tim Tebow was with the Broncos.

The Broncos never kept Tebow off-limits to the media.

One Chargers rookie who did talk was former California wide receiver Keenan Allen, who said he didn't think posting a photo of himself online wearing an Oakland Raiders cap would cause the stir it did.

"Obviously I had a Raiders hat on. I didn't think it would have the effect that it did have but obviously it did and I didn't mean for it to happen," Allen said sheepishly about getting caught wearing gear from the Chargers' most-hated rival. "I wasn't thinking about it at the time. I wasn't actually thinking about football at all. I was just going to grab a bite to eat. I posted something on Vine.

"I'm sorry about it and it won't happen again." Allen said he bought the hat while in college.

He posted the picture sometime after being drafted by the Chargers.

He also said veteran safety Eric Weddle "came up to me today and gave me the rundown ? don't do it again."

Outside linebacker Dwight Freeney, who agreed to a two-year deal with the Chargers on Saturday, wasn't at Monday's workout. McCoy said Freeney had a prior commitment.

    Indians blank Mariners 6-0

(AP) ? Justin Masterson struck out a season-high 11 in seven shutout innings and Michael Brantley homered and drove in four runs off Felix Hernandez as the Cleveland Indians toppled yet another former Cy Young Award winner on Sunday with a 6-0 win over the Seattle Mariners.

Brantley hit a three-run homer in the second inning off Hernandez (5-3), who failed to go at least six innings for the first time this season.

Staked to an early lead, Masterson (7-2) was dominant for the second straight start. He allowed three singles, easily outdueled Hernandez and ran his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 19. He shut out the New York Yankees 1-0 on four hits in his previous outing.

The Indians improved to 7-1 against Cy Young recipients, knocking off Hernandez, R.A. Dickey, David Price, Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Bartolo Colon and Justin Verlander.

    The AL Central-leading Indians have won 17 of 21 and are a baseball-best 20-7 since April 20.

Following walkoff wins in the first two games of the series, Cleveland took the drama out of this one early, building a 5-0 lead after two innings against Hernandez.

The 2010 Cy Young winner, who left his previous start after six innings with back stiffness, came in with the league's lowest ERA (1.53) but it rose to 2.07 after he gave up six runs and eight hits in five innings. Hernandez struck out eight, including the final three batters, but he was wasn't on his game ? and neither were the Mariners.

Seattle was only charged with one error, but the Mariners made several mental mistakes that helped the Indians.

    Not that Masterson needed any.

The big right-hander overpowered the Mariners, who couldn't catch up to his 97 mph fastball and only had two runners reach second base against him. The Indians were hoping Masterson could develop into their ace, and so far this season he's been the dependable front-of-the-rotation starter they desperately needed.

Pitching with a six-run lead, he got stronger as the game progressed, striking out five of the last six and seven in the last three innings.

Brantley's three-run homer with two outs in the second gave the Indians a 5-0 lead over Hernandez.

The right-hander, who needed 35 pitches to get through the first, retired the first two hitters on groundouts before Michael Bourn singled and went to third on Jason Kipnis' base hit to center. Brantley then drove an 0-1 pitch into the Indians' bullpen in center for just his second homer.

It was a stunning development against Hernandez, who came in having allowed just four earned runs in 44 innings over his past six starts.

A fundamental gaffe by Hernandez allowed the Indians to add a run in the fourth. With Mike Aviles at second after a double, Drew Stubbs topped a ball into the dirt that catcher Jesus Montero fielded in front of the plate and threw to first for the out. Aviles never slowed coming around third and scored easily because Montero got caught up the line and Hernandez failed to cover home.

The Indians jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first off Hernandez, who didn't get much help from his defense.

Bourn led off with a single that he alertly turned into a double when right fielder Michael Morse casually charged the slow roller into right-center. One out later, Brantley hit an RBI single and took second when Morse overthrew his cutoff man while trying to get the speedy Bourn at home.

Nick Swisher then hit a grounder that went through first baseman Justin Smoak's legs, giving Cleveland a 2-0 lead.

NOTES: Cleveland's starters are 13-4 in the past 21 games. ... White Sox RHP Jake Peavy is the only former Cy Young winner to beat the Indians this season. ... Masterson is the fifth starter to record double-digit strikeouts against the Mariners in 2013. ... The Indians will try to complete the four-game sweep on Monday as the teams conclude their wrap-around series with a matinee. ... Smoak has reached safely in 13 consecutive games. ... The Indians are 9-1 against the AL West. ... The Mariners failed to homer for the first time in 10 games.

Air Algerie planes were grounded for several hours on Saturday when the national carrier?s pilots staged a wildcat strike over pay, aviation industry sources in the North African country said.

News agency APS reported pilots at Algiers airport as saying their demands related to salaries, although no official of the aircrew union was available for comment.

Morning talks between management and the union were reported to have ended in agreement, APS added.

The work stoppage caused delays not only with Air Algerie flights but also with other carriers, an airport source said, before normal operations resumed in the afternoon.

The Foreign Office say the local consulate is assisting the family.

She has been named as Chloe Johnson in an interview by her grandmother April on Sky News who has been critical of the situation at the Coral Sea Waterworld Hotel.

She said her family were angry about what they allege to have been a lack of help at the scene and that an ambulance took four hours to arrive.

Ms Johnson said: ?She was a lovely lovely girl. She was intelligent for her age, she was starting to read. She was very polite.?

    Liberia's Johnson-Sirleaf defends governance record

    By Lesley Wroughton

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf on Friday defended her government's record on good governance and transparency, following an independent audit that cast doubt on her anti-corruption efforts.

She said a recent audit of resource contracts by accounting firm Moore Stephens contracts had been commissioned to fix, and not hide, problems in the West African country.

The independent audit showed that almost all the $8 billion worth of resource contracts signed by Liberia since 2009 violated the country's laws and showed widespread irregularities.

"We commissioned the audit, we wanted to know what went wrong because we want to set it right and that is exactly what we have done," Sirleaf told a Thomson Reuters Newsmaker event.

She said, however, that her government was slow to react to the audit's findings, but that it had since submitted a report to the country's transparency watchdog LEITI, co-chaired by the Finance Ministry, which commissioned the audit.

"The government is doing what it can, but there are problems," she acknowledged. She noted that Liberia was one of the first African states to join the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), a global program that tries to help governments avoid corruption.

Sirleaf, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and Africa's first freely elected female president in 2006, has won international acclaim for her "zero tolerance" stance against corruption and for turning around a country devastated by 14 years of sporadic civil war that ended in 2003.

Since then, Liberia's enormous resource wealth has attracted a flood of interest from foreign investors. The government has signed major mining and oil contracts including a $1.5 billion deal with Anglo-Australian miner BHP. It has also signed offshore deals with Chevron Petroleum and Exxon Mobil.

Sirleaf's opponents allege corruption, nepotism and mismanagement in Liberia's resources sectors and the audit report put the government in the uncomfortable position of deciding how to fix the problems.

Asked whether the audit's findings had undermined her momentum in fighting graft, Sirleaf replied: "Not really, we've had people ask questions and they should, but we also want to know what went wrong and we want to correct it."

She said before the audit her government had suspended all forestry operations after evidence of non-compliance in contracts.

Asked whether her government will cancel some of the faulty contracts, Sirleaf said: "The response has been given, a full report to the issues raised by the audit has been prepared and sent" to the LEITI.

She said she expects Liberia's economy will show double-digit growth within the next two years as direct foreign investment starts to have an impact.

The economy was hit by the global financial crisis in 2008-2009, but had still averaged 6.5 percent growth over the past four years.

"We have every reason to believe that we can hit double-digits in the next couple of years when those operations begin to lead to exports, and begin to lead to jobs, and begin to lead to an increase in per capita incomes," she said.

95 calorie pesto pasta (nutritious, vegan and gluten-free!) + ...

    95-cal-vegan-pesto-pasta

I?m full, which is weird! ? me

I am trying SO hard to eat well right now, but it?s pretty easy to stray.

Tonight I had a meal that felt really greedy but was actually pretty much as innocent as you can get. This dish uses an amazing pasta that?s available in health food shops and contains only 7.7 calories per 100g. It?s very chewy, which takes some getting used to, but it?s worth it for the lovely feeling of being full without the guilt.

The ?pesto? is super easy to make too and uses savoury yeast for flavour and nutrition, liquid aminos for a truly vegan seasoning, while fresh basil, baby spinach and garlic give that classic pesto flavour.

I?m really pleased with the results. If you?re vegan, coeliac, or on the 5:2 diet, this is a perfect dish for those days when you need something filling.

Here?s what to do (feeds one):

    Ingredients

    • 60g baby spinach (14 calories)
    • 1 pack of Slim Pasta spaghetti (16 calories)
    • 1/2 tsp olive oil (20 calories)
    • 8 tsp water (0 calories)
    • 1 rounded tbsp Engevita savoury yeast condiment with B12 (40 calories)
    • 1 small handful fresh basil (2 calories)
    • 1 spray of Liquid Aminos vegan soy sauce alternative (1 calorie)
    • 1/2 clove garlic (1 calorie)

    (Calories are estimated)

    Instructions

    1. In a large pan over a low heat, put the spinach, basil, oil, and garlic and half the water and cook until totally wilted ? add the rest of the water if it goes dry
    2. Tip into a blender, add the liquid aminos and blitz for a few seconds
    3. Drain and wash the ?pasta?, then cook over a medium heat for 2-3 minutes
    4. Stir the sauce through and serve

Simple, yummy, filling. Will you try it?

The redesign is the latest in a series of moves by ShopSavvy intended to continually improve the mobile experience for shoppers and help businesses of all kinds bridge the gap between themselves and their target audiences in new and innovative ways.

At least 6 confirmed dead in Texas tornado

GRANBURY, Texas (AP) ? At least six people were killed Wednesday as a spring tornado outbreak devastated parts of North Texas, destroying or damaging dozens of homes and injuring dozens of people.

The worst-hit city Wednesday was Granbury, where authorities say a deadly tornado tore through two neighborhoods about 8 p.m. Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds delivered the death toll at a midnight news conference.

"Some were found in houses. Some were found around houses," Deeds said. He also said the total could climb as crews pick through the rubble of shattered homes.

About 50 people were taken to a Granbury hospital, where 14 were admitted for treatment of injuries and two were transferred to a hospital in Fort Worth, about 35 miles to the northeast, Deeds said.

As many as 100 people were injured, said Matt Zavadsky, spokesman for MedStar Mobile Healthcare. His company sent three ambulances and a medical bus from its Fort Worth base to Granbury.

Deeds said officials were trying to account for 14 people, but it was not clear if they were missing or were away from the area for other reasons.

Hardest hit were two neighborhoods, Rancho Brazos Estates and DeCordova Ranch, in the southern end of the town of about 8,000 residents about 65 miles southwest of Dallas.

Ambulances from as far away as Fort Worth were being called to Granbury, said Tye Bell, Richland Hills police spokesman who was heading to Granbury on Wednesday night.

Rancho Brazos Estates resident Elizabeth Tovar said she rode out the tornado with her husband and sister as she clutched her 9-month-old daughter.

"We heard the winds whipping and glass smashing everywhere," said Tovar, 25. "I felt like a long time and when things died down I looked up and saw that the roof was gone."

Another resident of that neighborhood, Allacia Jenny, said she witnessed devastation in her neighborhood.

"The house across from mine looked like it was destroyed," said Jenny, 22.

Toppled large trees litter her yard, and "I saw power lines all over the place," she said.

At Stumpy's Lakeside Grill in Lake Granbury, the storm took diners and workers by surprise. Some people rushed inside from the patio and ducked under tables as the wind gusts and hail started, but nobody was injured, said Eric Martinez, a cook. Then they looked across the lake and saw several homeowners' boat docks "just get torn apart," he said.

"The boat docks just flew off, and they're actually gone," Martinez said, adding that the boards and other debris landed in some yards.

The same storm spawned another tornado that storm spotters told the National Weather Service was a mile wide. That twister tore through the southwestern quadrant of Cleburne, a courthouse city of about 30,000 about 25 miles southeast of Granbury.

There were no reports of deaths in that storm, Cleburne Mayor Scott Cain said, "but we do have the potential for some injuries." He had no estimates.

Cain had no estimate on the number of homes damaged, but he said he expected the number to soar into the dozens based on his inspection of damage ranging from roof damage to total destruction.

Another tornado hit the small town of Millsap, about 40 miles west of Fort Worth. Parker County Judge Mark Kelley said roof damage was reported to several houses and a barn was destroyed, but no injuries were reported.

Hail as large as grapefruit also pelted the area around Mineral Wells on Wednesday evening. A police dispatcher reported only minor damage.

Wallace reported from Dallas. Associated Press writers Angela K. Brown and Jamie Stengle in Dallas also contributed.

Washington State Pot Proposal Sets Licenses At $1,000 Per Year Cost

  • Former President Bill Clinton

Bill "Didn't Inhale" Clinton has supported decriminalizing marijuana for more than a decade and more recently has spoken out against the war on drugs. ?I think that most small amounts of marijuana have been decriminalized in some places, and should be," he said back in 2000 in an <a href="http://norml.org/news/2000/12/07/president-clinton-states-marijuana-should-be-decriminalized" target="_blank">interview with Rolling Stone</a>. "We really need a re-examination of our entire policy on imprisonment.? He's since spoken about the issue of marijuana and drug prohibition a number of times. Last year, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tom-angell/bill-clinton-drug-war_b_2271885.html" target="_blank">he appeared</a> in the documentary, "Breaking the Taboo," where he argued that the war on drugs has been a failure.

  • Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.)

Paul exhibited his libertarian tendencies earlier this year when he explained that he'd favor reforming marijuana laws to either decriminalize or reduce penalties for possession. ?I don't want to promote that but I also don't want to put people in jail who make a mistake," Paul <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/24/rand-paul-marijuana_n_2945307.html" target="_blank">said</a>. "There are a lot of young people who do this and then later on in their twenties they grow up and get married and they quit doing things like this. I don't want to put them in jail and ruin their lives."

  • Former Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas)

As a congressman, Paul took his opposition to marijuana and drug prohibition a step farther than his son has so far. He supported a number of bills that would have removed the plant from its current status as a Schedule I substance under federal law, where it is considered alongside heroin and PCP. Because his history on the topic is so expansive, just take a look at the video to the left for a selection of his comments.

  • Evangelist Pat Robertson

While the 83-year-old Robertson may say a lot of things that make him sound like a kooky old man, he's also made a few remarks to endear himself to marijuana advocates. "I really believe we should treat marijuana the way we treat beverage alcohol," Robertson said in an <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/08/us/pat-robertson-backs-legalizing-marijuana.html" target="_blank">interview with The New York Times</a> in 2012. "I've never used marijuana and I don't intend to, but it's just one of those things that I think: this war on drugs just hasn't succeeded." Robertson has made similar remarks on his "700 Club" show before, but the Times, like many others, perhaps felt they must have misheard him.

  • New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg

In a state of the city address earlier this year, Bloomberg made it clear that he supported a <a href="https://www.governor.ny.gov/press/01092013sostranscript" target="_blank">promise</a> by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) to push marijuana decriminalization. "I support Governor Cuomo's proposal to make possession of small amounts of marijuana a violation, rather than a misdemeanor, and we'll work to help him pass it." A <a href="http://gothamist.com/2013/03/22/nyc_marijuana_reform_hits_pot_hole.php" target="_blank">similar effort specific to NYC</a> has made some progress, but faces an unclear path forward with New York lawmakers.

  • Actor Bryan Cranston

Some may think of Cranston as more of a meth guy thanks to Walter White, his character on AMC's hit show "Breaking Bad," but in real life he's spoken out against current pot laws, suggesting that recreational marijuana use isn't a big deal -- and shouldn't be treated like it. ?[T]o me, marijuana is no different than wine," he said in an <a href="http://hightimes.com/read/high-times-interview-bryan-cransto" target="_blank">interview with High Times</a>. "It's a drug of choice. It's meant to alter your current state -- and that's not a bad thing. It's ridiculous that marijuana is still illegal. We're still fighting for it ... It comes down to individual decision-making. There are millions of people who smoke pot on a social basis and don't become criminals. So stop with that argument -- it doesn't work.? <a href="http://marijuanamajority.com/?id=72" target="_blank">[H/T Marijuana Majority]</a>

  • Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson (R)

Unlike many politicians, Johnson, a Libertarian presidential candidate in 2012, has <a href="http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/meet-gary-johnson-ron-paul-2012_520775.html" target="_blank">unabashedly admitted using marijuana</a>. But beyond his personal history with pot, he's been an outspoken advocate for legalizing and taxing it. From his <a href="https://www.garyjohnson2012.com/issues/drug-policy-reform" target="_blank">campaign platform</a>: "By managing marijuana like alcohol and tobacco - regulating, taxing and enforcing its lawful use - America will be better off. The billions saved on marijuana interdiction, along with the billions captured as legal revenue, can be redirected against the individuals committing real crimes against society."

  • Author Stephen King

King hasn't been shy about advocating for a legal marijuana industry that could give easy access to recreational users and revenue to the states. ?Marijuana should not only be legal, I think it should be a cottage industry," he said in an interview with <a href="http://hightimes.com/read/interview-stephen-king-1981" target="_blank">High Times</a>. "My wife says, and I agree with her, that what would be really great for Maine would be to legalize dope completely and set up dope stores the way that there are state-run liquor stores.? <a href="http://marijuanamajority.com/?id=92" target="_blank">[H/T Marijuana Majority]</a>

  • Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.)

Rohrabacher is a co-sponsor of the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/12/respect-state-marijuana-laws-act_n_3070501.html" target="_blank">"Respect State Marijuana Laws Act,"</a> which seeks to protect marijuana users or businesses acting legally according to state marijuana laws from being prosecuted under the federal Controlled Substances Act. While marijuana has been made legal for various uses in a number of states, the Obama administration continues to enforce federal laws across the nation. This has led to numerous raids of marijuana-based businesses, as well as prosecutions of growers and other people involved in pot. Washington and Colorado, where marijuana has been legalized for recreational use, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/26/doj-marijuana-policy_n_2766959.html" target="_blank">have still not received information</a> from the federal government on how it intends to respond to their implementation of a legal pot economy.

  • Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska)

Young is also a co-sponsor of the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/12/respect-state-marijuana-laws-act_n_3070501.html" target="_blank">"Respect State Marijuana Laws Act."</a> Hopefully <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/29/don-young-apology_n_2978242.html" target="_blank">he'll choose his words carefully</a> when explaining who he thinks should grow marijuana.

  • Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.)

    Amash is also a co-sponsor of the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/12/respect-state-marijuana-laws-act_n_3070501.html" target="_blank">"Respect State Marijuana Laws Act."</a>

  • Conservative Commentator Glenn Beck

Back in 2009, when Beck had a Fox News show, he suggested that marijuana legalization could be a worthwhile solution to raging drug violence on the nation's border with Mexico. "I think it's about time we legalize marijuana," he said. "We have to make a choice in this country. We either put people who are smoking marijuana behind bars or we legalize it, but this little game we're playing in the middle is not helping us, it is not helping Mexico and it is causing massive violence on our southern border."

  • Billionaire Richard Branson

From an <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/richard-branson/to-win-the-drug-war-follow-the-states_b_1852870.html" target="_blank">op-ed by Branson</a> arguing for an end to the war on drugs: "Decriminalization does not result in increased drug use. Portugal's 10 year experiment shows clearly that enough is enough. It is time to end the war on drugs worldwide. We must stop criminalising drug users. Health and treatment should be offered to drug users - not prison. Bad drugs policies affect literally hundreds of thousands of individuals and communities across the world. We need to provide medical help to those that have problematic use - not criminal retribution."

  • GOP Mega-Donor David Koch

Koch may have funneled countless dollars to conservative candidates who oppose reforming marijuana laws, but back in 1980, when he was the vice presidential candidate for the Libertarian Party, he <a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=ueUCAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PA18&dq=criminalst&pg=PA20#v=twopage&q&f=false" target="_blank">suggested</a> that it was "ridiculous" to consider people who smoked pot "criminals."

  • Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R)

In 2010, Perry told Jon Stewart that he believed in a federalist approach to marijuana laws -- that is, to allow states to determine their own approach and to tell the federal government to butt out.

  • Comedy Central's Jon Stewart

Stewart has made a habit of taking down politicians who exhibit an uncompromising stance on marijuana prohibition. In 2012, Stewart took New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) to task for vetoing a marijuana decriminalization bill. ?Alright, as much as I disagree, I don?t think marijuana should be illegal, but it is illegal on the federal level," Stewart began. "Christie is a former prosecutor, a man of conviction, of principle, doesn?t believe that the state should supersede federal law." The praise in the second sentence is a good sign that Stewart is about to shred Christie. Watch the rest of his takedown to the left.

  • Actor Jack Nicholson

In an <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/moslive/article-1350653/Jack-Nicholson-I-used-feel-irresistible-women-Not-more.html#ixzz24C0fOK6Q" target="_blank">interview with the UK's Daily Mail</a> in 2011, Nicholson said that he personally still used marijuana, before making the case for ending the prohibition on pot as well as other drugs. "I don't tend to say this publicly, but we can see it's a curative thing. The narcotics industry is also enormous. It funds terrorism and - this is a huge problem in America - fuels the foreign gangs," he said. "More than 85 percent of men incarcerated in America are on drug-related offences. It costs $40,000 a year for every prisoner. If they were really serious about the economy there would be a sensible discussion about legalization."

  • Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman (R)

In a 2013 <a href="http://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/marriage-equality-is-a-conservative-cause485/" target="_blank">American Conservative op-ed</a> chock full of moderate Republican views, Huntsman snuck in a call to "applaud states that lead on reforming drug policy." While Obama and his <a href="http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/04/17/drug-czar-no-state-can-nullify-federal-marijuana-ban/" target="_blank">administration</a> have responded to state marijuana reforms by saying they must enforce federal laws against marijuana, the president has the power to reschedule the drug, which would allow federal authorities to shift resources away from a prohibitive approach.

  • Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R)

Palin spoke out on marijuana in 2010, saying she didn't support legalizing it but also calling it a "minimal problem" for the nation. "However, I think we need to prioritize our law enforcement efforts," Palin said. "If somebody's gonna smoke a joint in their house and not do anybody any harm, then perhaps there are other things our cops should be looking at to engage in and try to clean up some of the other problems we have in society." While Obama has spoken repeatedly about not being interested in prosecuting small-time marijuana users, he hasn't done anything to prevent them from being busted by law enforcement in states where the drug is still illegal.

  • Comedian Jimmy Kimmel

Kimmel notably took a shot at Obama while serving as host of the 2012 White House Correspondents Dinner, questioning a continued marijuana crackdown under the president's administration. He then <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/28/jimmy-kimmel-whcd-pot_n_1462140.html" target="_blank">went on to say</a> that the issue of its continued illegality was a serious political concern for many Americans. <em>(Check out the video to the left.)</em>

  • Former President Jimmy Carter

Carter hasn't minced words in expressing his opposition to harsh marijuana and drug prohibition policies. In 2012, the former president <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/12/jimmy-carter-marijuana_n_2283989.html" target="_blank">said he was fine</a> with state legalization efforts, though he himself doesn't necessary support legalizing the drug. ?As president 35 years ago I called for decriminalizing -- but not legalizing -- the possession of marijuana,? Carter <a href="http://cnsnews.com/news/article/jimmy-carter-decriminalize-pot" target="_blank">said</a>. ?Since then, U.S. drug policies have been very horrible to our own country because of an explosion in prison populations.?

  • Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli

A staunch conservative currently running for Virginia governor, Cuccinelli suggested earlier this year that he was "evolving" on marijuana legalization, and that he supported the rights of states to determine their own pot laws. "I don't have a problem with states experimenting with this sort of thing I think that's the role of states," Cuccinelli said, according to <a href="http://www.nbc12.com/story/21079505/cuccinelli-open-to-legalizing-marijuana" target="_blank">Ryan Nobles of WWBT</a>. • Columnist Dan Savage

Savage slammed Obama for perpetuating the war on drugs while on HBO's "Real Time With Bill Maher" in 2009. ?The proof will be in the policy. The war on drugs has gotten a really bad rap, when you ask people if they support the war on drugs they say no ... [Obama's] budget once again has the same old drug warrior policy ... I reject the assumption that everybody who is using drugs needs treatment or is an addict and needs to get arrested ... Not all drug use is abuse.? He's <a href="http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2011/06/02/the-war-on-drugs" target="_blank">kept up the fight</a> for drug policy reform since. <a href="http://marijuanamajority.com/?id=765" target="_blank">[H/T Marijuana Majority]</a>

  • MSNBC's Al Sharpton

Sharpton has repeatedly spoken out in favor of reforming drug laws. In 2011, he suggested that the nation had wasted trillions of dollars in an ill-fated effort that had weighed particularly heavily on the African American community. ?We've been fighting the war on drugs since the '60s. And guess what? Trillions of dollars later, we are losing," Sharpton said during a segment on MSNBC. "When you look at the disparities in sentencing drug offenders, hasn't this kind of injustice undermined the legitimacy of our criminal justice system?? <a href="http://marijuanamajority.com/?id=430" target="_blank">[H/T Marijuana Majority]</a>

  • Former Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.)

Tancredo came out aggressively in favor of reforming marijuana laws in 2010, <a href="http://coloradoindependent.com/62723/tancredo-calls-for-legalizing-marijuana" target="_blank">telling the Colorado Independent</a> that the correct path forward was "Legalize it. Regulate it. Tax it." Tancredo continued, ?The arguments against marijuana today are the same as the arguments against liquor years ago.? Years later, the former congressman agreed to smoke pot on camera with a documentary filmmaker, a deal that he <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/28/tom-tancredo-backs-out-of_n_2567360.html" target="_blank">later backed out of</a>.

NASA Says Kepler's Planet-Searching Days May Be Numbered

The planet-hunting career of NASA's Kepler spacecraft might be near its end.

Astronomers said Wednesday that a reaction wheel that keeps the orbiting telescope pointed at tiny, distant patches of sky to look for Earth-like planets has failed. If they can't fix it, Kepler will be relegated to a less prestigious mission, directing its gaze much closer to home in a search for so-called "near-Earth objects," i.e., meteors and asteroids.

As NPR's Geoffrey Brumfiel reports, Kepler, launched in 2009, was designed to "monitor 100,000 stars in a single patch of sky. It looked for tiny eclipses of Earth-like planets."

And it's done an amazing job in the past four years, Brumfiel says:

"Just last month, scientists announced the spacecraft had seen three new planets around distant stars. But Kepler has also been aging and mission managers now say it can no longer focus on the patch of sky it had been watching."

Bill Borucki, Kepler's principal investigator, says the space telescope has given his team plenty of potential planets to study.

"We have at least two years of work ahead of us with the data we already have," Borucki says.

While Kepler still has some life in it, scientists say it could use its remaining maneuvering fuel to watch out for asteroids like 2012 DA 14, which brushed past Earth in February, and (coincidentally) the meteor that slammed into Russia at almost exactly the same time.

Kepler has identified 115 planets and has a list of 2,740 other candidates. It has concentrated on stars in the constellations Cygnus and Lyra, "looking for dips in starlight caused by planets passing, or transiting, in front of their suns," according to The New York Times:

"Since Earth transits only once a year, two more years would have given astronomers a chance to see more transits of the planets they are looking for. Without the extra time, the data will be noisy, astronomers say, and so the answer will be a little more uncertain than it might have been.

" 'It was one of those things that was a gift to humanity,' said one astronomer who spoke on condition of anonymity because NASA had not yet made the news public. 'We're all going to lose for sure.' "

(AP) ? Emma Watson is reveling in her post-"Potter" freedom at the Cannes Film Festival, relishing a Valley Girl role far from her wise-beyond-her-years Hermione.

The 23-year-old "Harry Potter" actress stars in Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring," which premiered Thursday at the French Riviera festival. The British actress plays a celebrity-obsessed, thickly accented Los Angeles teenager who, with a group of friends, burgles Hollywood stars such as Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan.

At Cannes, Watson told reporters that while she remains proud of her work on the "Potter" films, they now feel long ago.

"I'm not trying to run away from it," she said. "I've just had an amazing three or four years. I'm really re-enjoying having the chance to transform into new roles and work with new creative people."

"The Bling Ring" is based on a Vanity Fair article about the true story of teenagers who robbed celebrities like Paris Hilton and Orlando Bloom while they were out at premieres and other events. The character Watson plays, Nicki, is modeled on Alexis Neiers, who starred in the reality series "Pretty Wild."

Watson said she watched American TV shows like "The Hills," ''Keeping up With the Kardashians" and "The World According to Paris" to prepare for the role.

"It'd be very easy for Nicki to feel like a parody," Watson said. "Somehow I had to understand and empathize with her and that was really biggest challenge, second to getting the accent down. It's quite a specific dialect."

Since the "Harry Potter" films concluded in 2011 with the second part of "Deathly Hallows," Watson has gravitated to more adult films, including last year's coming-of-age tale "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" and Darren Aronofsky's Biblical epic "Noah," which recently finished shooting. She also makes a cameo as herself in this summer's "This is the End," an apocalyptic comedy.

"For Emma, it was, I think, really interesting to see an actress that you've seen in other things really transform into a completely difficult character," Coppola said.

Young actors often treat Cannes as a coming-out-party, a place to introduce themselves on a more artistically-minded stage. Watson shined with enthusiasm for her experience with the improvisation-friendly Coppola.

"I could work in a way that was a lot more loose than I was used to," said Watson. "I'm used to really having to stick to my lines because a lot of people know them by heart."
